Zumba revolutionised the way people viewed fitness classes when it hit gyms and community halls around the country in the mid-1990s. It was out with the Legs, Bums, and Tums and Step-Aerobic classes and in with sassy salsas, mambos and merengues. Participants loved the fact that they were actively encouraged to have fun while exercising and, while Zumba is still popular, there’s a new kid on the block.
Say hello to Pound. Created in LA (where else!) in 2011, it’s still pretty new to the UK. Pound takes the hypnotic beats of Zumba a step further and delivers 45-minutes of exercise done with lightly weighted drumsticks (that are called “Ripstix”) and rock music with a steady beat. Classes are cleverly choreographed to distract you from the effort of what is actually a pretty high-intensity aerobic workout, with moves that can be adapted to suit all fitness levels.
Regular exercise can improve your agility and endurance, reduce stress, and lower your blood pressure, so if you like music but haven’t found a fitness regime that you like, maybe Pound is for you. Classes run every Wednesday at 6.30pm at the Charleston Community Centre.
Another fitness trend set to be big in 2017 is BoxxMethod (picture right), high-energy, high-intensity shadow boxing workout you can do in as little as 15 minutes. Boxx is perfect for people who don’t want to sweat with strangers because you do it in the privacy of your own home. You pay a monthly subscription and you can access the online content whenever you want, with regular new routines and variations being added to keep it fresh and exciting.
